Dems downstream, Obama upstream

With the W. Virginia primary over it is clear that Obama needs to make up some ground with working class whites. Bill Clinton's comments after South Carolina's primary regarding Jesse Jackson's win put race on the table to stay (according to Dick Morris before the primary). It didn't happen right away, but with Rev. Wrights comments and Obama's recorded San Fran comments, he has a great challenge. Hispanics aren't automatic for him either. McCain's fight for immigration reform has won him some points with many Hispanics. Obama will have his work cut out for him in this supposed Dem year.

The house Repubs are in clear trouble. The loss of one of the safest seats in the country for them is more than a wake up call (or should be).

It seems without a "Contract with America" level commitment to complete overhaul of our energy policy (one wonders if that would be possible considering who gives to these legislators, and would anyone believe them, anyway?) along with a understandable tax policy that helps the country, they don't stand a chance. Maybe another Sept 11 might get them a second look, but that is no longer a given.

The Dems have been putting up a group of conservative/moderate group of candidates that are sucking the life out of the Repubs. Dem's may one day find themselves losing ground, though, when these same legislators back conservative positions on abortion, gun rights, school choice, etc. It has happened in the past.

Having stated that things could seriously be in the trashcan for the Republicans. And you may want to sell anything that will have capitol gains attached, short of a miracle.
